Jim Durrell Recreation Centre, Ottawa

Despite a busy day of events in Ottawa, we are deeply grateful to everyone who still showed up and made Session 3 of the Heritage Keepers Initiative a resounding success! Your presence, commitment, and cultural pride inspire and energize this movement.

To our participants, team members, volunteers, and partners, thank you for your unwavering consistency, heart, and collaboration. Every session has grown stronger because of you.

A Historic Highlight

We were honoured to welcome His Royal Majesty, the Olówú of Òwò, Ọba Adewale Abdulrasheed Akanbi, a distinguished Yoruba monarch from Nigeria. His storytelling session transported us through the rich history of the Owo Kingdom, its cultural heritage, and the role of African leadership in preserving intergenerational wisdom.

His presence was more than ceremonial. It was deeply educational, spiritual, and symbolic of our mission to connect generations and honour African traditions. We extend our heartfelt thanks to His Royal Majesty and the organizers who made his appearance possible.

We look forward to welcoming more prominent African leaders and cultural figures in future sessions.

Empowerment & Education

We also had the pleasure of hosting two insightful sessions:

  1. Centerpointe Financial Centre, represented by Nafiu Idowu, emphasized the importance of financial literacy, especially for seniors, to guard against scams and economic abuse.
  2. Assisting Hands Home Care, through Adepeju Araoye, encouraged us to plan and share valuable tips on better care for older people in our communities.

Their contributions reinforced our mission of preserving culture while supporting the holistic well-being of our elders.

Culture in Every Corner

The day was filled with:

🎲 Nostalgic board games

🗣️ Captivating stories

🍛 Delicious traditional meals

💬 Cross-generational conversations

🎉 Unforgettable moments of joy and connection

We also had the support of key community partners like Chichi’s Restaurant and Bar and Pengo Events and Entertainment, whose presence and collaboration added vibrant flavours and flair to the evening.

Our Mission in Motion

With every gathering, Heritage Keepers does precisely what it set out to do: bridge generations, celebrate identity, and foster a space where our stories are not forgotten but passed down with pride.

Thank you for journeying with us. We can’t wait to see you at Session 4!
